Starting Point

The garden was dominated by extensive concrete, leaving little room for planting and creating a stark, exposed feel.

The space lacked privacy, softness and a clear relationship between the house and garden.

Design Approach

Large areas of concrete were removed to allow for the introduction of quality topsoil and generous planting beds.

This enabled a more considered layout, with layered planting used to soften the space, introduce structure and create a sense of privacy.

Result

The garden has been transformed from a bland, urban space into a green, cottage-style retreat.

Rich planting now provides privacy and enclosure, creating a calm, inviting space that feels connected to the Victorian house, natural and full of character.

Starting Point

An established garden with strong bones, including mature trees and boundary planting, but dominated by a lawn and lacking colour and seasonal interest.

The patio was narrow and poorly proportioned with overgrown shrubs obscuring views and limiting the connection between the house and garden.

Design Approach

The design focussed on working with the existing structure — selectively editing rather than clearing. Large shrubs were removed to open up views, with several repositioned elsewhere. The patio was updated, extended to create a generous, functional space for entertaining.

The lawn was reduced and reshaped, allowing for mixed borders that introduce structure, movement and seasonal interest.

Result

The garden now balances its mature framework with a lighter, more cohesive layout.

The extended patio creates a welcoming space for entertaining, while new planting introduces colour, texture and seasonal change.

The garden feels open, connected and aligned with the owner's lifestyle.
